Yubecca Bragg gives a tour of McMurdo Station's wastewater treatment plant. Sewage treatment depends on allowing microorganisms to break down waste until the liquid part of the waste can be safely released into the ocean. Between 150,000 and 180,000 pounds a year of the remaining solid waste, called sludge, is packed into containers and sent back to the United States.
