Usage of Photos in This Library
USAP Photo Library photos fall into one of two categories. They are either:
- Covered under the Creative Commons Attribution-Non Commercial-No Derivatives license (CC BY-NC-ND 4.0)
- In the public domain
The majority of photos in this library have a Creative Commons license; only a few are in the public domain. Read on for information on how to
identify whether a photo is Creative Commons or public domain and how each type of photo can be used. Anyone who downloads photos from this
library agrees to use the images according to the terms outlined below. Contact the

Creative Commons Photos
Creative Commons photos in this library have an Attribution-Non Commercial-No Derivatives license
(CC BY-NC-ND 4.0). These photos are tagged with the keywords "Creative Commons"
and "CC BY-NC-ND 4.0." and license information is listed below the photographer name. Anyone may freely download and use these photos
provided that they:
- Provide attribution: The user must give appropriate credit to the photographer and the U.S. National Science Foundation (NSF) and provide a link to the Creative Commons license.
- Don't make money: Photo usage is for non-commercial purposes only. No person, organization or company may profit off any photo covered under this type of license. This includes advertisements and the use of photos on products for sale (e.g., t-shirts, coffee mugs, etc.). News media, schools, and educational publishers whose purpose is to further educational awareness of Antarctic science and the U.S. Antarctic Program may freely use these photos with attribution.
- Make no derivative works: No one may adapt, transform, or build upon the original photo without the explicit permission of the photographer.

Public Domain Photos
Photos whose copyright has expired or were taken by government employees as part of their job duties are considered to be in the public domain. Public domain
works are not subject to copyright laws, so anyone may download these photos and use them freely, even for commercial purposes. Public domain photos in this
library are tagged with the keyword "Public Domain." and license information is listed below the photographer name. Attribution is not legally required
for public domain photos but is strongly recommended.
Submitting Photos
The U.S. Antarctic Program welcomes any and all photo submissions to the USAP Photo Library. We especially appreciate images that represent Antarctic science.
Please note that USAP or NSF may use your photos in official publications or on social media without your knowledge. To submit a photo, contact the
Photo Librarian
who will provide further information.
