The U.S. Coast Guard cutter Polar Star patrols McMurdo Sound near Hut Point Peninsula. Vince's Cross near the tip of the peninsula is a memorial to George Vince, a member of Robert Falcon Scott's Discovery expedition who slipped off of a cliff and drowned while trying to return to the ship during a blizzard in 1902. Vince was the first person to die in McMurdo Sound.
