People shovel snow covering a building at the Siple Dome field camp in West Antarctica, located about 500 miles from McMurdo Station. The camp is named after Paul Siple, the first science leader at the Amundsen-Scott South Pole Station during 1956-57 for the International Geophysical Year, and the high plateau or dome where it is located. Once the site of a major ice core drilling project, it is now a deep field camp with a skiway that serves as an emergency landing strip for planes.
