Scientist Jacob Buffo takes a water sample from an instrument sent down a borehole in the ocean before a remotely operated vehicle called SCINI is deployed into the ocean about 40 meters below the McMurdo Ice Shelf. Buffo is part of a team, led by Britney Schmidt at the Georgia Institute of Technology, that is working on a project called SIMPLE, for Sub-Ice Marine and PLanetary-analog Ecosystems. Researchers are gathering data using robots like SCINI about the interface of ice and ocean for a future mission to study the ice-covered moon Europa.
