Mount Erebus looms in the background of the historic Nimrod hut, located near the penguin colonies at Cape Royds. The hut was constructed in February 1908 by the members of Earnest Shackleton's Nimrod expedition. It was subsequently used by Robert Falcon Scott's Terra Nova expedition (1911-1913) and raided for supplies by Shackleton's Ross Sea Party (1915-1916). Mount Erebus is the worlds southernmost active volcano.
