McMurdo Station as viewed from Observation Hill. the cyclindrical objects in the foreground are fuel storage tanks. The smaller objects beyond them are cargo being staged for transport to field camps, the South Pole, or use in the immediate vacinity. The buildings to the left are dormitories and work centers. The annual sea ice can be seen in the left distance. McMurdo Station sits on the volcanic lava of Ross Island.
