The U.S. Coast Guard cutter Polar Star approaches McMurdo Station. Mount Discovery is seen in the distance. The heavy icebreaker clears a channel in the sea ice around McMurdo Station to allow cargo and fuel ships access to the ice pier. During the 2013-14 summer season, winds and storms helped to clear McMurdo Sound of sea ice, leaving a large area of open water.
