A mountain tent near the terminus of Canada Glacier at Lake Hoare in the Dry Valleys. Scientists are conducting Long Term Ecological Research in the Dry Valleys. Here in the Taylor Valley scientists are monitoring the mass balance of selected glaciers, such as the Canada Glacier. They establish a temporary meteorological station, install satellite reflectors and measure glacier snow lines and ablation stakes with a Global Positioning System (GPS). They also drill cryconite holes in the glaciers, collect samples and install conductivity and temperature probes in the holes for winter data collection.
