The U.S. International Trans Antarctic Scientific Expedition (ITASE) makes its way slowly across the Antarctic ice sheet. The forked Caterpillar tractor is towing a Berco equipment sled containing insulated ice core boxes and Nansen Sleds on top of food boxes, the mechanics sled, the kitchen, the Eclipse drill sled, and on a long rope, the restroom. The ITASE project, under the leadership of Paul Mayewski,is collecting ice cores, air samples and other data across Antarctica to reconstruct past 200 years of climate. Visit the ITASE website for more information.
