The South Pole Telescope is silhouetted by the sun and surrounded by a faint halo, an atmospheric effect from sunlight shining through ice particles suspended in the atmosphere. The extremely thin, dry air at more than 9,000 feet of elevation make for excellent observing conditions in the microwave band even during the 24-hour daylight of summer.

The South Pole Telescope (SPT) measures the cosmic microwave background (CMB) radiation. The project's goal is to detect all galaxy clusters in this region of the sky through the spectral distortion they impart on the CMB. Visit the Antarctic Sun to learn more.
