The sea ice runway, as seen from above, on its last full day of operation this summer. Each year the runway is moved off the McMurdo Sound sea ice and to the Williams Field Skiway, which is on the Ross Ice Shelf. Later, planes will primarily use the Pegasus White Ice Runway. Only the sea ice and Pegasus runways can accomodate wheeled aircraft. Williams Field is only for ski-equipped planes.
