Sled dog teams were used for some transportation purposes by the U.S. Navy as shown in this 1956 photo, with Lieutenant junior grade Jack Tuck in command of this sled. Dogs and other nonindigenous animals were banned with the Antarctic Conservation Act of 1978. This photo was taken on the annual sea ice near what is today known as McMurdo Station.
