McMurdo Station, Ross Island. An aerial view of the turning basin carved out of the annual sea ice by the US Coast Guard Ice Breaker POLAR SEA. An ice breaker opens a channel to McMurdo Station allowing cargo and fuel vessels to deliver needed supplies. Just beyond Observation Hill (755 ft) can be seen buildings comprising Williams Field, a snow-packed airport for ski-equipped airplanes.
