Lynn Peters, a mechanic and driver on the International Trans-Antarctic Scientific Expedition (ITASE) traverse, tries to balance a 4,000-pound track on a Challenger tractor at Byrd Field Camp. The space between the tracks on the tractor needed to be widened to prevent snow and ice from clogging the vehicle during its 1,200-mile journey across the West Antarctic Ice Sheet.
