This photo shows Hut Point Peninsula as it appeared in late 1957. An orange fuel storage tank, built by the US Navy for the International Geophysical Year can be seen. It is no longer there today. To the left of the fuel tank is Discovery Hut, built in 1902 by Robert Falcon Scott's Discovery expedition. It is still located there. The annual sea ice surrounds the peninsula. In late January, the ice is melted sufficiently for a ship to reach this southernmost navigable point.
