A gentoo penguin stands in a pool of water on Robert Island in the South Shetland Islands. Despite their ungainly gait on land, they are graceful swimmers and adept at catching krill squid and fish. Gentoo penguins prefer nesting in rocky areas, often congregating in colonies of up to several thousand birds.
