Algae beds at the bottom of Lake Hoare in the Dry Valleys of southern Victoria Land are sampled for analysis as part of the Long Term Ecological Research (LTER) program. The National Science Foundation started the LTER program in the United States in 1980 as a way to gather broad-based ecological data over a long timescale, and the Dry Valleys in Antarctica were added in the early 1990s.
