A cargo pallet carrying food for Amundsen-Scott South Pole Station snakes from the belly of a C-17 airplane near the station on December 20, 2006. It was the first airdrop by a C-17 at the Pole and was developed as a proof of concept in the event an emergency drop is required during the winter, when airplanes cannot land in the extreme cold of the South Pole.
