The Maersk Peary fuel ship at the McMurdo Station ice pier. The biennial delivery of more than seven million gallons of fuel is off-loaded to bulk storage tanks. This fuel is used for aviation, heating, and vehicles at McMurdo, South Pole and field camps.

The ice pier is a block of ice approximately 18-20 feet deep that is covered with dirt to protect it from the 24-hours of sunlight. A Bailey bridge connects the pier to the land of Ross Island. The fuel lines extend from the tanker, across the bridge and are connected to fuel pipes that run to the bulk tanks (not shown).
The Royal Society Range of mountains can be seen in the distance, across McMurdo Sound.
