A crane carefully places the 13.1-meter Ross Island Earth Station (RIES) antenna reflector assembly onto the pedestal. RIES is located on Transmitter-Site (T-Site), a hill on the east side of McMurdo Station. The construction of this satellite communications dish represents a significant milestone in the jointly funded NSF Office of Polar Programs and NOAA Joint Polar Satellite System collaboration to modernize the McMurdo satellite communications infrastructure in anticipation of bandwidth enhancements in future years.
