A McMurdo Station fleet operations team begins building a new ice pier during the 2021 winter. An ice pier is constructed by pumping sea water on top of sea ice, in what is called four inch lifts. Additional 'lifts' are created every few days, with steel cabling added to reinforce the ice, until it is approximately 15-20 feet deep.

This ice pier will be used by arriving vessels in January and February to bring cargo and fuel to the station.
