The Ross Island Earth Station (RIES) 13.1-meter satellite antenna is under construction on the west side of Transmitter-Site, a plateau 600+ feet above McMurdo Station. Three 330 kW wind turbines are located on the east side of the plateau.

The construction of RIES represents a significant milestone in the jointly funded NSF Office of Polar Programs and NOAA Joint Polar Satellite System collaboration to modernize the McMurdo satellite communications infrastructure in anticipation of bandwidth enhancements in future years.
