The McMurdo ice pier is shown in the foreground. It is surrounded by the annual sea ice of McMurdo Sound and Ross Island.

The ice pier is built during the winter by pumping several inches of sea water on top of the sea ice, allowing it to freeze, then pumping more sea water on top of that, until about 15-20 feet of depth is reached.
In late January the annual sea ice will be melted and the ice pier will have open water on three sides. A cargo vessel will deliver millions of pounds of cargo which will be off-loaded onto flat bed semis on the ice pier.
