A new island was discovered in February 2020 by participants on board the National Science Foundation's research vessel Nathaniel B. Palmer. The researchers on board the NBP were participating in the International Thwaites Glacier Collaboration, a multi-year cooperative effort between the British Antarctic Survey and the United States Antarctic Program that was studying West Antarctic glaciers. The new island is located in Pine Island Bay.
