Air Center Helicopters, Inc. (ACHI) personnel perform final assembly on a new Bell-412 helicopter at Phoenix Airfield, Antarctica. Beginning in the austral 2019-2020 season, ACHI will provide two new A-Star B3 and two Medium Bell 412 helicopters in support of the National Science Foundation-managed U.S. Antarctic Program. Antarctic helicopter operations are primarily conducted for logistical support of scientific research. Helicopters may also be required for search and rescue (SAR) purposes, depending on the location and availability of other aircraft for SAR. McMurdo Station is the base of operations, and helicopters frequently fly to the Dry Valleys, Ross Island, Black Island, and local sea ice locations.
