A sign welcomes participants to Phoenix Airfield, located on the Ross Ice Shelf near McMurdo Station.

The surface and foundation of the Phoenix runway is made of snow that’s been compacted by heavy rollers weighing up to 160,000 pounds. This crushes the snowflakes down into dense layers, nearly as hard as concrete. As new snow falls onto the field, it too will be crushed down to the hard landing surface.
