A Long Term Ecological Research (LTER) scientist works on an ice auger before drilling into the ice.

Ice cores are extracted annually from the seasonal sea ice and Dry Valley lake ice to analyze their constituents, measure the ice depth and extract water samples from below.

This annual data collection allows scientists to see short and long term trends.
