A Long Term Ecological Research (LTER) scientist uses an auger to extract an ice sample from the annual sea ice at New Harbor, Taylor Valley, Antarctica. 

The ice coring allows scientists to measure ice thickness, analyze chemistry and biological constituents in the ice, and take water samples from the ocean below. 
Annual data collection allows scientists to see short and long term trends.
