Two Long Term Ecological Research (LTER) scientists measure the ice thickness on Lake Fryxell, Taylor Valley, McMurdo Dry Valleys.

Annual data collection allows scientists to see short and long term trends to better understand the changing environment.

This tent shelter is located on top of the ice-covered lake. A hole drilled through the lake ice allows scientists to measure ice thickness, analyze chemistry and biological constituents in the ice, and take water samples from the lake. The lake is a result of runoff from annual seasonal melting of surrounding glaciers.
