An aerial view of McMurdo Station, Hut Point Peninsula, Ross Island. Mount Erebus, the southernmost active volcano on Earth is in the distance.

McMurdo Station is the cluster of about 100 buildings in the center of the photo.

The flat white in the foreground and to the far left is the annual sea ice that covers McMurdo Sound. The paths are the results of tracked vehicles traveling over the sea ice to locations for scientific research. The scientists use the ice as a platform for diving under it to study the unique marine biology in the Southern Ocean.

At the time this photo was taken, the annual sea ice was about seven feet thick. Travel over the ice is halted by mid-December as the warm temperatures melt the ice.
