The U.S. Coast Guard icebreaker Polar Star escorts the cargo vessel Ocean Giant through the annual sea ice to McMurdo Station. The icebreaker arrives every January to cut a channel from the sea ice edge to McMurdo Station. This year the sea ice edge was 19 miles from McMurdo. This channel has to be kept open to allow an annual cargo vessel and fuel tanker to arrive in late January/early February, bringing supplies to last for the coming year.
