A U.S. Coast Guard helicopter crashed on the annual sea ice about four miles from McMurdo Station. The helicopter, a CH-19E, was assigned to the icebreaker Atka. It had departed McMurdo when a snow storm white out reduced visibility and it crashed at 1:45 am on November 28, 1963. The two crew members and six passengers were injured, but there were no fatalities.
