Pallets containing barrels of fuel plummet through the elevator well of a military air transport service C-124 Globemaster during the aerial resupply of South Pole Station. Airdropped with only a stabilizing parachute from an altitude of 1,500 feet, each pallet holds 450-pound containers of fuel that are strapped on a sandwich type base of plywood and honey-comb cardboard which absorbs the shock upon impact.
