This frost-encircled grin greeted the first plane to land at the south pole for the summer support season of Operation Deep Freeze '62. The C-130 broke eight months of isolation at the bottom of the earth for 21 Navy men and scientists stationed at Amundsen-Scott South Pole Station. The man behind the grin is Equipment Operator Third Class James C. Peteison of Jamestown, N.D. The cold (39 degrees below zero) and wind that day whitened Peteison's beard, mustache, eyebrows and eyelashes with an accumulation of frost.
