A helium-inflated balloon is launched. Attached to the balloon is a 500 foot nylon line on the end of which is a 100 pound simulated body. A specially re-configured P2V-7 Neptune airplane would then catch the line in its nose frame. The line would be caught in an inner mechanism and the weight would be hauled aboard. This rescue unit was installed to pick up stranded people in places that were out of the range for helicopters and in rough terrain where planes could not land.
