Aerial view of Amundsen-Scott South Pole Station. For hundreds of miles in every direction there is nothing but snow and ice. Only ski-equipped planes can land on the skiway shown in the center of this photo. To the right is the main station and to the left is an area known as the Dark Sector. During the 24-hour darkness of winter, the Dark Sector is devoid of light pollution from the station, thus facilitating the use of telescopes and other scientific equipment.
