Amundsen-Scott South Pole Station sits on the polar plateau with nothing but flat white vastness for hundreds of miles in every direction. The cluster of buildings to the right are in the Dark Sector, an area devoid of light and radio wave interference where several telescopes are located. Because the South Pole sits at an elevation of 9,301 feet (2,835 meters) and the air is extremely dry, it is a prime location for astrophysical research.
