South Pole Traverse team members load explosives onto a trailer. The dynamite will be used to blast open hidden crevasses before filling them with snow so the heavy tractors and sleds can cross over safely. The South Pole Traverse is in a 'proof of concept' stage, to determine whether it is practical to haul supplies to the South Pole over the ice. Cargo is currently flown to the South Pole in LC-130 airplanes. For more information on the traverse, read the November 14, 2004, issue of THE ANTARCTIC SUN at: www.usap.gov.
