Robert B. Flint, Jr., at Vostok Station in December 1974. Flint had just wintered over as an exchange scientist in the exchange program between the United States and the Soviet Union. Each year one Soviet scientist wintered at one of the U.S. bases, and one American wintered at one of the Soviet bases. Flint was an employee of National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) under a grant from National Science Foundation. He collected data on Very Low Frequency radio phenomena, magnetic micropulsations, electric fields, and ionospheric opacity. Vostok is of particular interest because it is uniquely situated near the Geomagnetic South Pole.
