Weather and GPS instruments are placed on uncrevassed ice next to Pine Island Glacier (PIG) to allow near continuous observations of the weather conditions and to monitor its movement. The West Antarctic Ice Sheet (WAIS) is potentially unstable, moving swiftly toward the ocean. PIG is the 'spout' through which much of the ice is pouring into the ocean. Scientists are studying the flow rate and how the ocean affects the ice glacier’s movement.Visit NASA's PIG website for more information.
