McMurdo Station, the largest Antarctic research facility, sits along the coastline of Ross Island. British explorer Sir Robert Falcon Scott's Discovery Hut can be seen in the lower right corner. The brown buildings aligned in the center are dormitories. The main road visible up the center connects McMurdo with New Zealand's Scott Base, 3 km behind the hill to the left. Observation Hill is on the right. The round white structures in the center, to the right of the road, are fuel storage tanks. The volcanic lava-strewn ground is part of only 2 percent of Antarctica not permanently covered with ice. Located at 77 degrees, 51 minutes South, and 166 degrees, 40 minutes East, it is the southernmost point on Earth that a ship can reach.
