A hot water drill bores into the ice sheet at Amundsen-Scott South Pole Station to construct the sensor array for the IceCube Neutrino Observatory. About 80 holes will be drilled, each one about 2.4 kilometers deep. Neutrino detection instruments will be lowered into each hole. The drillers use hot water to melt the holes.
