A DigitalGlobe satellite image of Ross Island's Hut Point Peninsula. McMurdo Station is located on the left side and Scott Base is located on the right side of the tip. The large white flat area to the right is the permanent Ross Ice Shelf. The area to the left is the annual sea ice. A temporary road extends from McMurdo Station to the Annual Sea Ice Runway, where wheeled fixed-wing aircraft land during the early part of the austral summer. The cluster of objects on the right is known as Williams Field, from where the Long Duration Balloon is launched each December.
