Edmund Hillary stands next to the newly constructed landing strip at Marble Point, Victoria Land, Antarctica, in this early 1958 photo. This was the first dirt landing strip on the continent. It was constructed during the austral summer of 1957-1958. Fifty years later, Marble Point no longer has an airplane landing strip, but instead is a refueling station for helicopters out of McMurdo Station. Hillary was instrumental in building New Zealand's Scott Base, which is located near McMurdo Station. The man standing beside Hillary is US Navy pilot Gus Shinn.
