U.S. Antarctic Program participant Christina Hammock with a tank of liquid helium inside an LC-130 cargo plane. Hammock works as the cryogenic technician at South Pole. Liquid helium is used to cool detectors on telescopes to within a few degrees of absolute zero, or -236C.
