People carrying flags.

Date Taken: January 12, 2008

The South Pole ceremonial pole and flags are moved as part of the new station dedication ceremony. Pictured are Michele Gentille with the French flag, Yuki Takahashi with the Japanese flag and Elke Bergholz-Nelson with the Belgian flag. The South African flag is being carried by an unidentied person. In the distance the US flag remains flying next to the geophysical pole marker. The geophysical marker is made of brass and sits exactly at 90 degrees South. The ceremonial pole, on the other hand, is candy-cane striped with a silver ball on top and is always surrounded by the flags of the original 12 signatory nations to the Antarctic Treaty.
